Fresh COVID-19 Outbreak in Benue State: WHO Urges Vaccination
The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared a recent surge in COVID-19 cases, with 25 infections reported in Benue State. Ogechukwu Chigbo, WHO Surveillance Officer for Benue, emphasized the importance of vaccination, dispelling negative rumors and encouraging the public to take advantage of available vaccines.
Chigbo highlighted concerns about misinformation affecting vaccine uptake, stating, “There is enough vaccine to protect everyone. People should come out and get vaccinated because those dying of COVID when the vaccine is available are committing suicide.”
Despite recording 25 cases this year in Benue, no fatalities have been reported. Chigbo urged residents aged 18 and above to get vaccinated, emphasizing the safety of the available Johnson & Johnson vaccine, administered in a single dose.
The WHO has integrated COVID-19 vaccination into routine immunization exercises to enhance coverage. Kaltume Ibrahim, WHO Sub-national Technical Assistant, cautioned against charging for vaccines meant to be free, particularly for mothers seeking immunization for their babies and children.
Ibrahim stressed, “Vaccines are free, and no one must pay for them. Communities need to know that vaccines are accessible without cost, and vaccination points will be adjusted for convenience.”
