Frequent Sponge Bathing Unnecessary, Says Dermatologist
Dr. Folakemi Cole-Adeife, a Consultant Dermatologist at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), has advised against the frequent use of sponges during bathing. In an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Dr. Cole-Adeife explained that overusing sponges can strip the skin of its natural oils, cause micro-tears, and introduce harmful microorganisms.
According to the dermatologist, sponges act as exfoliating tools, but the skin naturally exfoliates itself most of the time. She noted that daily or excessive use of a sponge is unnecessary and could lead to skin irritation or other issues.
“A lot of people cannot bathe without sponges, but the truth is, you don’t need to use a sponge too frequently. The skin exfoliates itself naturally most of the time,” Dr. Cole-Adeife said. “Even if exfoliation is needed, it shouldn’t be done daily. Frequent scrubbing can create micro-trauma, strip the skin of essential oils, and even introduce bacteria.”
She added that frequent sponge use could contribute to itchy skin and suggested avoiding it to see if the condition improves. For those who feel unclean without a sponge, she recommended limiting its use to once or twice a week, or at most three times a week.
“In Nigeria, there’s a common belief that unless the skin is scrubbed squeaky clean, bathing isn’t complete,” she said. “However, using a sponge daily isn’t necessary. If you must, keep it to a few times a week.”
