Former Zimbabwean Goalkeeper George Chigova Passes Away at 32

In a somber announcement, Pretoria club SuperSport United revealed that former Zimbabwean goalkeeper George Chigova, aged 32, passed away after collapsing at his residence in South Africa on Wednesday.

Chigova, who had previously faced health challenges, had collapsed during a training session with SuperSport last July and had been on medical leave due to a diagnosed heart condition.

The late goalkeeper had an illustrious international career, notably contributing to Zimbabwe’s journey to the 2014 African Nations Championship semi-finals and participating in the Africa Cup of Nations five years later.

Starting his senior club career with Harare Gunners in 2010, Chigova also played for Dynamos, a revered team in Zimbabwe, before making a move to SuperSport. Following a stint with Polokwane City in both the South African first and second tiers spanning five seasons, he returned to SuperSport in 2020.

The football community mourns the loss of George Chigova, a talented goalkeeper whose contributions to the sport will be remembered. His untimely demise follows closely on the heels of the passing of former Zimbabwean midfielder and coach Rahman Gumbo, aged 59, who succumbed to a heart attack in Botswana just five days earlier.
