Former President Buhari Speaks on Naira Redesign, Gives Reasons for Policy
In a recent statement, Former President Muhammadu Buhari has offered insight into the Naira redesign policy implemented during his administration, asserting that it was not a deliberate move but aimed at achieving a cleaner electoral process in 2023.
Buhari attributed the implementation of the policy to a former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), highlighting its positive impact on the electoral landscape. He contended that the individuals expressing dissatisfaction with the policy were those with excessive wealth.
Underlining his position, Buhari stated, “The scarcity of money was not deliberately done to punish Nigerians. There is no denying that the naira redesign policy gave us cleaner elections. It was people who had too much money that had problems with it.”
Addressing concerns about the availability of the new currency notes, Buhari referenced a revealing incident where over N260 million was discovered with a bank chairman. Despite challenges, he emphasized that he refrained from taking the matter to the Supreme Court, emphasizing a commitment to fairness.
“Some APC governors went to court. I refused to judge people by my own standard,” Buhari concluded, shedding light on the complexities surrounding the implementation of the Naira redesign policy and its implications on the political landscape.
