Former NNPCL Boss Mele Kyari Reacts to EFCC Arrest Report
Former Group Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), Mele Kyari, has denied reports circulating online that he has been arrested by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). In a statement posted late Saturday on his X account, Kyari described the claims as deliberate falsehood aimed at tarnishing his reputation. He stated that he is currently taking a “well-deserved rest” following his recent exit from office and expressed readiness to respond to any legitimate inquiries concerning his time in office.
Kyari’s clarification comes amid speculation triggered by an online publication, which alleged that he was in EFCC custody. “This is clear mischief and a calculated attempt by the newspaper and its sponsors to achieve a desired outcome, which only them know,” he wrote.
President Bola Tinubu had in April removed both Kyari and the former NNPCL chairman, Pius Akinyelure, and appointed Bashir Ojulari as the new CEO, effective April 2, 2025.
Kyari, who served NNPCL for 34 years—nearly six of which were as Group CEO—reaffirmed his integrity and commitment to transparency. He said his actions were guided by a strong sense of accountability, both to national institutions and to his faith. “I must emphasize that I served with the fear of God… I am happy to account for my stewardship in this world,” he stated.
He also urged the media to uphold ethical standards and avoid spreading unverified information, warning that such reports could damage national interest and send negative signals to the international community. Kyari concluded by thanking those who reached out with concern and assured them of his willingness to cooperate fully with any lawful process.
