Former Nigeria National Team Goalkeeper is Dead

Former Nigeria national team goalkeeper, Peter “Apo” Fregene, has died at the age of 77 after battling long-term health issues. The 1968 Olympian passed away peacefully, surrounded by his wife Tina and their two children.

The news of Fregene’s passing was confirmed by Segun Odegbami, a former Nigerian international and captain of the national team. Odegbami expressed deep gratitude to those who supported Fregene throughout his health struggles.

In a heartfelt message on his Facebook page, Odegbami wrote, “On behalf of all generations of Nigerian footballers, Olympians, sports persons, his family, friends, fans, and a few incredible Nigerians that quietly rallied round with their support, prayers, and the will of the Creator, kept him alive until this night, I say a big ‘thank you.'”

Fregene’s health issues had sparked concern across Nigeria, leading to a strong outpouring of support from the sports community. Odegbami’s initial appeal for help, which featured a distressing photo of Fregene, prompted three generous Nigerians to fund his treatment at Obule Medical Centre in Sapele, Delta State.

Odegbami acknowledged the kindness shown but expressed frustration over the lack of long-term government support for Nigeria’s sporting veterans. He questioned why there is no established welfare system for retired athletes, highlighting the vulnerabilities they face in their later years.

“Why can’t we set up a simple welfare scheme for active and retired athletes to take care of our declining health in old age?” Odegbami asked, urging the government to take action.

Despite the government’s inaction, the swift response from Nigerians brought comfort to Fregene’s family in his final days. As the football community mourns his passing, Fregene will be remembered for his contributions to Nigerian football and his enduring legacy as a national icon.

Odegbami’s final words to his friend were: “Good night, ‘Apo.’ Rest, my friend, rest in peace, finally.”
