Former Minister Hospitalised After Axe Attack by Man Accusing Him of Affair with His Wife
Former Cabinet Minister and longtime Binga South Member of Parliament, Joel Gabbuza, is recovering in hospital following a violent axe attack on Friday night, June 7, 2025. The assault is believed to have been motivated by a personal dispute, with the alleged attacker accusing Gabbuza of having an affair with his wife.
The incident has sparked widespread concern and speculation, though authorities have yet to release an official statement. Sources say the suspect fled the scene and remains at large, while police investigations are ongoing.
In the wake of the attack, false reports of Gabbuza’s death spread rapidly, prompting clarification from his family. Speaking to CITE, Gabbuza’s son confirmed that the former MP is alive and receiving treatment at Hwange Colliery Hospital. “His condition has improved from last night; he is now able to speak,” he said, noting that plans are underway to transfer him to Mpilo Hospital in Bulawayo for further care.
Gabbuza, a veteran politician, began his parliamentary career in 2000 with the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC), representing Binga. After boundary adjustments in 2008, he served as MP for Binga South until his recall in October 2023. Between 2009 and 2013, during the Government of National Unity, he held the post of Minister of Water Resources and Development before leaving the position when the ministry was restructured.
Updates on Gabbuza’s recovery and the investigation are expected in the coming days.
