Former Finance Minister Dies at 90
In a solemn announcement, the family of Dr. Onaolapo Soleye, a distinguished figure in Nigerian politics and academia, revealed his peaceful passing at the age of 90. Dr. Soleye, who marked his 90th birthday last Saturday, breathed his last in the early hours of Wednesday.
The late Dr. Soleye, a former Finance Minister appointed during General Muhammadu Buhari’s military regime, served the nation for twenty months in this capacity. His extensive public service also included roles as a Commissioner for Finance and Industry in Ogun State, as well as a position on the board of the Obasanjo Presidential Library.
The family’s official statement expressed gratitude for a life marked by impact and positive events, noting Dr. Soleye’s roles as an Associate Professor at the University of Ibadan and Commissioner for Works in Ogun State. A devout lover of God and humanity, his commitment extended beyond professional realms, encompassing active participation in church activities and providing support to those he encountered.
The announcement read, “The loss of Dr. Soleye is surely not that of the Soleye family alone. It’s our father who has just passed, and we must all prepare to be part of his rites of passage. Burial details will be announced by the family in due course. Until then, please pray for the repose of Papa’s soul and God’s comfort upon his family and other loved ones.”
Meanwhile, tributes have poured in from various quarters, including Otunba Gbenga Daniel, the Senator representing Ogun East in the National Assembly. Describing Dr. Soleye as a remarkable man, Daniel emphasized the late minister’s dedication to acts of kindness and good deeds that left a lasting impact on many lives.
Daniel remarked, “The passage of Dr. Soleye is a personal loss to me because I share very deep relationships with him as a younger friend and confidant. I benefited immensely from his unconditional support during trying times.”
As condolences flood in from political figures, colleagues, and mentees, the legacy of Dr. Onaolapo Soleye remains one of principled leadership, economic acumen, and unwavering commitment to a better Nigeria.
