Following UK and Canada, Australia Set to Introduce Stricter Immigration and Student Visa Policies

In a bid to address concerns over a “badly broken” immigration system, Australian authorities are set to unveil a new policy on Monday that aims to significantly reduce immigration and tighten visa issuance for international students.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, addressing reporters in Sydney on Saturday, emphasized the need for a migration system that prioritizes Australia’s interests. “We need to have a migration system that enables Australia to get the skills that we need but make sure the system is working in the interests of all Australians,” stated Mr. Albanese. “Well, we are determined to fix this.”

The Prime Minister expressed dissatisfaction with the current situation, stating that many immigrants enroll in courses that do not substantially contribute to their skills or the national interest. “People are coming here, enrolling in courses that don’t really add substantially to either their skills base or to the national interest here,” he remarked. “So, it’s not in the interests of our neighbors, nor is it in the interests of Australia, that there not be a crackdown on this.”

Details of the new immigration policy, described as a response to the nation’s immigration system challenges, will be revealed on Monday by Home Affairs Minister Clare O’Neil. The policy is expected to introduce stringent rules, particularly for holders of temporary visas.

The announcement follows recent moves by other countries, including Canada, which increased the “cost-of-living financial requirement for study permit applicants” for international students, and the United Kingdom, which introduced stricter rules for visa applications.

According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, the country’s population grew by 2.2 percent to 26.5 million people in the past 12 months, with 81 percent of the growth attributed to net overseas migration. Australia now joins a growing list of nations implementing more stringent visa policies in response to evolving global immigration dynamics.
