Five Key Points from Tinubu’s Discussion with Bill Gates at the World Economic Forum in Riyadh
During the World Economic Forum Special Meeting in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, President Bola Tinubu of Nigeria held a significant discussion with Bill Gates, the founder of Microsoft and a renowned philanthropist. Their conversation revolved around the critical role of technology in achieving transparency and combating corruption in Nigeria. Here’s a summary of the five crucial points President Tinubu shared with Bill Gates during their meeting.
1. Technology as a Tool to Fight Corruption
President Tinubu emphasized that technology is an indispensable weapon against corruption, fraud, and irregularity, which have plagued Nigeria for years. He told Bill Gates that technology will play a central role in his administration’s efforts to clean up the public sector and establish a more transparent government. “Technology is the enemy of fraud, corruption, and irregularity,” the President highlighted.
2. Investments in Technology to Enhance Transparency
President Tinubu reassured Bill Gates that his administration is making significant investments in technology to promote transparency and accountability in government operations. These investments aim to accelerate public-sector performance and improve service delivery to the Nigerian people.
3. Reliable Technology to Support Government Interventions
The President discussed the reliability of technology and its role in supporting new government interventions, such as a national consumer credit system. He indicated that the current technology architecture is being improved to ensure these new systems work seamlessly and benefit all Nigerians.
4. Resistance to Change but Benefits Will Follow
President Tinubu acknowledged that there will always be initial resistance when efforts are made to strengthen systems and combat corruption. However, he expressed confidence that Nigeria will ultimately reap the rewards of its technology investments, helping to deliver on the promises that led to his election. “There is always the initial resistance,” he explained. “Corruption, self-interest, and fraudulent activity will always be an enemy, but when you bend that curve, you will receive the benefit.”
5. No Shortcut to Success: Learning from Lagos
Reflecting on his tenure as Governor of Lagos State, President Tinubu emphasized that there is no shortcut to achieving significant economic growth and transparency. He shared that technology played a crucial role in enhancing Lagos’s revenue base, transforming it from an initial N600 million to over N8 billion. The President pointed out that Lagos is now aiming for a trillion naira in revenue, illustrating the impact that technology can have when deployed effectively.
With these insights, President Tinubu conveyed his commitment to leveraging technology to drive positive change and build a more transparent and prosperous Nigeria.
