Fire Erupts at Dangote Refinery in Lagos
Fire has broken out at the Dangote Petroleum Refinery, located in the Lekki Free Zone near Lagos, Nigeria. This integrated refinery, which began refining diesel, has a capacity of 650,000 barrels per day (BPD).
The cause of the fire remains unknown at this time. Footage circulating on social media shows thick, dark smoke billowing from one of the facility’s tank storages. The video has been widely shared, sparking concerns about the extent of the damage.
The Dangote Oil Refinery, owned by the Dangote Group, was inaugurated on May 22, 2023. It is a critical infrastructure project aimed at bolstering Nigeria’s refining capacity and reducing its dependency on imported petroleum products.
Emergency services are currently responding to the situation.
