Finnish Court Sets May 2025 Deadline for Simon Ekpa’s Terrorism Trial

Finnish authorities have announced that the trial of Simon Ekpa, a pro-Biafran agitator and self-proclaimed Prime Minister of the Biafra Republic Government-in-Exile, is scheduled for May 2025. The development follows his arrest alongside four others on suspicion of terrorism-related activities, including incitement to violence and financing terrorism.

The Päijät-Häme District Court in Finland recently ordered Ekpa’s detention on charges of public incitement to commit a crime with terrorist intent. Finnish police allege that Ekpa, a Nigerian-Finnish citizen, used social media platforms to incite violence in Nigeria’s South-East region, resulting in significant unrest and economic disruptions. Authorities have linked him to attacks targeting civilians and security forces, with investigations tracing his alleged activities back to 2021.

Senior Detective Superintendent Mikko Laaksonen of Finland’s National Bureau of Investigation confirmed to The PUNCH that prosecutors have until May 2025 to bring charges against Ekpa. He added that investigations remain ongoing, with no further details currently available. Laaksonen noted that Ekpa and Finnish authorities could request a re-evaluation of the case within two weeks, as allowed under Finnish law.

Ekpa’s arrest has garnered international attention, with Finnish officials emphasizing cross-border collaboration in the investigation. However, the government has refrained from disclosing the specifics of this cooperation. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Nigeria described Ekpa’s detention as a critical step in addressing the activities of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and mitigating threats posed by transnational actors.

Ekpa has faced widespread criticism for his calls to boycott Nigeria’s 2023 general elections, a campaign that led to violence and economic stagnation in the South-East region. Reports estimate the region has suffered economic losses exceeding ₦4 trillion over two years due to his actions and the enforcement of sit-at-home orders by the Eastern Security Network (ESN).

Nigerian Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe welcomed Ekpa’s arrest, expressing hope that it would deter violence in the South-East. Abaribe criticized Ekpa and his followers for exploiting Biafran agitation to commit crimes, which he said undermined IPOB’s initial goal of a peaceful referendum. He lamented that these activities have blurred the distinction between genuine agitators and criminal elements.

Meanwhile, IPOB’s legal counsel, Ifeanyi Ejiofor, urged peace and unity in the region while denouncing rumors of a December 2 declaration of the Republic of Biafra. Ejiofor called on residents to reject divisive narratives, asserting that freedom cannot be achieved through violence. He criticized Ekpa’s actions as fraudulent and counterproductive, urging supporters to abandon false claims and work towards reconciliation.
