FIFA Suspends 2 More Countries from Playing in 2026 World Cup
FIFA has suspended two additional football federations ahead of the 2026 World Cup, bringing the total number of banned nations to three. The latest suspensions come alongside an ongoing ban, further limiting participation in the tournament set to take place in Canada, Mexico, and the United States.
The governing body cited governance and regulatory violations as the reasons for the bans. One federation faced sanctions for failing to implement a revised constitution ensuring fair and democratic elections, an issue that has led to previous suspensions. The latest decision means the ban will remain in place until necessary reforms are approved by the organization’s congress.
The second suspension was imposed due to allegations of third-party interference in football operations, a direct violation of FIFA regulations. Following two investigative missions, FIFA determined that external influence compromised the federation’s independence. However, a path to reinstatement remains open if full control of the federation’s headquarters and facilities is restored before the tournament.
With the World Cup returning in 2026, defending champions will aim to retain their title, while other top teams—including recent European champions and a newly coached contender—will look to challenge for football’s most prestigious prize.
