FIFA Rankings: Super Eagles Slide 8 Places Globally, Now 5th in Africa
The Super Eagles of Nigeria have dropped eight spots from 30th to 38th in the latest FIFA rankings. This downward move also places Nigeria as the fifth-best team in Africa, two steps down from their previous position.
The updated rankings, released on Thursday by FIFA, reflect the Super Eagles’ recent lackluster performances in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers. A 1-1 draw against South Africa and a 2-1 defeat to the Benin Republic in June contributed to Nigeria’s slip. Earlier, the team also drew against Lesotho and Zimbabwe, leaving them fifth in their qualification group.
The disappointing results have sparked considerable pressure on the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF). In response, the NFF announced plans to appoint an expatriate technical adviser for the team. Following this announcement, George Finidi resigned as the Super Eagles’ head coach after just two games in charge.
On the continental front, Morocco and Senegal retained their positions as Africa’s top teams. Egypt and Cote d’Ivoire have climbed to third and fourth, respectively.
Globally, Argentina continues to lead the rankings, followed by France and Belgium. Brazil has moved ahead of England to claim the fourth spot.
The next FIFA world ranking will be published on July 18, 2024.
