FG Warns of Health Crisis, Demands Immediate Release of Kidnapped Neurosurgeon in Anambra

The Federal Government has condemned the abduction of Consultant Neurosurgeon, Dr Tochukwu Mbanugo, in Nnewi, Anambra State, calling it a grave threat to Nigeria’s health security.

Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, Dr Adekunle Salako, expressed deep concern on Sunday, describing the kidnapping as a disturbing reflection of rising insecurity and its impact on the already fragile health system.

He noted that Nigeria has fewer than 150 practising neurosurgeons serving over 220 million people, far below the World Health Organisation’s recommendation of one neurosurgeon per 100,000 citizens. “Nigeria currently has one neurosurgeon per 1.9 million citizens, making every specialist invaluable,” he said.

Salako condemned the attack as a direct assault on the nation’s health infrastructure and collective well-being. He urged the Anambra State Government and all relevant security agencies to intensify efforts to locate and rescue Dr Mbanugo swiftly and safely. “Doctors, nurses and allied health professionals are national assets who must be protected and respected,” he stressed.

According to reports, Dr Mbanugo was abducted around Omatha Junction, Uruagu, Nnewi, while returning home after performing multiple complex brain surgeries at the Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital. Salako said the doctor had just completed several critical operations, including a brain tumour resection, before being attacked. “His kidnapping occurred at the very point where he should have been safest, returning home from serving humanity,” the Minister lamented.

Authorities confirmed that contact was later made by the abductors through Dr Mbanugo’s phone with some of his colleagues. The incident has been reported to the Anambra State Police Command, the Department of State Services, the Police Anti-Kidnapping Squad and local vigilante groups.

Salako added that the management of NAUTH is working closely with security agencies, the Nigerian Medical Association and other stakeholders to ensure the neurosurgeon’s immediate and safe release.
