FG Suspends Import Duty on Rice, Flour, Wheat, and Other Essential Food Items to Combat Hunger

The Federal Government, via the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), has announced the suspension of import duties on essential food items such as rice, flour, and wheat. This move aims to alleviate the soaring costs of food and address the severe hunger crisis currently afflicting Nigeria.

In a statement released yesterday, the Comptroller-General of the NCS, Mr. Adewale Adeniyi, emphasized the government’s dedication to tackling the escalating prices of basic foodstuffs to mitigate hunger across the nation.

“Global inflation is impacting nations worldwide, including Nigeria,” Adeniyi stated. “To address this, the Federal Government is suspending import duties and taxes on essential food items to make them more affordable. We are committed to implementing this measure seamlessly to address the problem of hunger in our nation.”

He further highlighted the government’s efforts to streamline export processes, ensuring Nigerian goods reach international markets more efficiently. The introduction of tools like the Advanced Ruling System, Authorized Economic Operator, and Time Release Study is expected to enhance trade, stimulate the economy, and create opportunities for farmers, artisans, and entrepreneurs.

Adeniyi also underscored the NCS’s intensified efforts in collaboration with other agencies to prevent the proliferation of arms and dangerous weapons through Nigeria’s borders. He pointed out that disruptions in the supply chain negatively impact foreign investments, distort trade, increase scarcity, and hinder revenue collection.

“In these challenging times, let us unite in resilience and cooperation,” Adeniyi urged. “We extend our heartfelt gratitude to those who have embraced the path of peace and dialogue. Your constructive engagement shows a commitment to our nation’s well-being; your cooperation is invaluable as we work to overcome these challenges and build a brighter future.”

The Comptroller-General called for constructive engagement and cooperation from all Nigerians to navigate the current challenges and foster a more prosperous future for the country.
