FG Suspends $300 Helicopter Landing Levy Amid Protests

In another instance of policy reversal under President Tinubu’s administration, the Federal Government has temporarily suspended the contentious $300 helicopter landing fee following significant backlash from industry stakeholders.

The fee, imposed on helicopter operators and outsourced to the consultancy firm Messers NAEBI Dynamic Concept Limited, sparked protests, leading to its suspension. Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Mr. Festus Keyamo, initially defended the levy, which was introduced during Senator Hadi Sirika’s tenure. However, he succumbed to pressure on Friday, announcing the suspension through a statement signed by Ministry Spokesman Odutayo Oluseyi.

The statement highlighted that further actions would depend on the findings of a review committee. “Following a meeting with the AON executive on the issue of helicopter landing levies at aerodromes, helipads, airstrips, etc., Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, has temporarily suspended the enforcement granted to Messers NAEBI Dynamic Concept Ltd. This suspension is effective from 30th May 2024,” the statement read.

The suspension follows calls from industry stakeholders for a review. Keyamo has established a committee comprising members from the Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development, its relevant agencies, the Airline Operators of Nigeria (AON), International Oil Companies (IOCs), and Messers NAEBI Dynamic Concept Ltd. This committee is tasked with addressing the issues raised and providing a report by the end of June 2024.
