FG: Only Nigerians with NIN Can Buy ₦40,000 Rice

The Federal Government has announced that only Nigerians with a valid National Identification Number (NIN) will be eligible to purchase subsidized rice, priced at ₦40,000 per 50kg bag, as part of its food intervention program. This initiative, aimed at reducing food prices and curbing racketeering, was revealed during the official launch of 30,000 metric tonnes of milled rice for public sale.

President Bola Tinubu, represented by the Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Abubakar Kyari, at the flag-off ceremony, emphasized that the rice sale will be strictly monitored, with each individual allowed to buy only one bag. Kyari reiterated that this initiative is a response to the rising cost of food in the country, driven by global and local factors such as the COVID-19 pandemic, the Russia-Ukraine war, and climate change.

“This intervention comes at a crucial time for the country,” Kyari said, “and it aligns with the government’s broader efforts to address food insecurity and high commodity prices.”

The Minister explained that the process to purchase rice will require verification through NIN and phone numbers to prevent fraudulent activity and ensure a wider distribution. Public servants registered under the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS) will also be eligible. A multi-disciplinary team has been deployed to oversee the program, ensuring transparency and equitable distribution.

Haruna Sule Abutu, Director of the Food and Strategic Reserve Department, outlined the purchasing process. Buyers will present their NIN at the point of sale, where a code number and Treasury receipt will be generated. This receipt will detail the collection point and time to avoid crowding at distribution centers.

Kyari urged Nigerians to remain patient and assured them that the government’s efforts to enhance food security would soon begin to bear fruit. The rice intervention is expected to not only lower the price of rice but also drive down the cost of other staple foods.
