FG, Labour Resume Minimum Wage Talks Today
The tripartite committee responsible for negotiating the national minimum wage is set to reconvene today, aiming to finalize an agreement on new wage standards for workers.
This meeting follows a recent impasse in discussions and conflicting proposals from both the federal government and labor unions. Previously, organized labor had issued an ultimatum to the federal government, demanding an acceptable wage figure by May 31, 2024, to address current economic realities.
The federal government has since revised its offer, increasing it from N48,000 to N57,000. In response, the labor union has lowered its benchmark from N615,000 to N497,000 as the proposed monthly wage for public workers.
Labor representatives have criticized both private employers and the government for their reluctance to negotiate a fair national minimum wage, highlighting significant discrepancies in the figures presented. They have also expressed concern over the government’s lack of substantiated data to justify its proposed wage offer, exacerbating the negotiation challenges.
