FG Contemplates Repatriation of Absconded TETFund-Sponsored Lecturers

The Federal Government of Nigeria has expressed deep concern over the growing number of university lecturers who, having been sponsored to study abroad by the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund), have absconded from their academic responsibilities.

Sonny Echono, the Executive Secretary of TETFund, highlighted this disconcerting trend during a press interaction at the TETFund management retreat in Makurdi, Benue State. Echono revealed that the government is contemplating compelling these errant lecturers to either reimburse the funds invested in their education or face repatriation.

“I don’t want to give figures because it is alarming. It is very sad that this opportunity that is being given is being abused,” expressed Echono, emphasizing the magnitude of the issue.

Elaborating on the situation, he explained, “The figure is comprehensive. That is why it is a bit large because others have come back home but did not complete the minimum [years] of their bond before deciding to relocate or [join] what is called the Japa syndrome.”

Echono disclosed the existence of a refined database tracking such cases, acknowledging the challenges in obtaining accurate reports. He clarified that while some individuals exceeded their course periods or obtained extensions, others outrightly absconded from their commitments.

“The number is not encouraging, and I can tell you that even the security agencies are becoming interested, and they are looking at that,” added Echono, underscoring the gravity of the situation and the potential involvement of law enforcement in addressing this matter.
