Federal High Court Adjourns Trial of Ex-Anambra Governor, Obiano

The trial of former Anambra governor, Willie Obiano, faced another delay as the Federal High Court in Lagos adjourned proceedings until Wednesday, March 13. Obiano, who is facing a nine-count charge of money laundering amounting to N4 billion, appeared before Justice Inyang Ekwo.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) had arraigned Mr. Obiano on January 24, accusing him of diverting funds totaling N4,008,573,350 from the state’s security account during his last five years in office.

During the recent court session, Obiano’s counsel, Patrick Ikwueto, requested an adjournment, citing the need to thoroughly examine the written address. The defense emphasized the importance of being adequately informed before responding.

Responding to the plea, Justice Inyang Ekwo granted the adjournment, rescheduling the case for March 13. Sylvanne Tahir, representing the EFCC, concurred with the decision.

In a separate development, Mr. Ikwueto expressed dissatisfaction with media reports misinterpreting their applications. He clarified that Obiano’s challenge was directed at the jurisdiction of the Federal High Court division, refuting claims that he contested the court’s authority to try him for alleged offenses committed in Anambra State.
