FBI Arrests UK-Based Nigerian Fraudster Over Multimillion-Naira Broadway Ticket Scam
The FBI has arrested Ajibola Oduntan, a UK-based Nigerian, for his alleged role in a ticketing scam that defrauded the Broadway musical Wicked of more than $100,000 in 2023. Oduntan, 47, who also holds an Irish passport, faces charges of wire fraud and wire fraud conspiracy in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Kentucky, Louisville. His trial is scheduled to begin on November 10.
According to court filings, Oduntan allegedly used stolen credit card information to purchase at least 61 tickets for *Wicked* performances at Kentucky Performing Arts between September and October 2023. He then resold the tickets on StubHub, a leading U.S. ticket resale platform, to unsuspecting buyers. Credit card companies later issued chargebacks for the fraudulent purchases, leaving KPA with losses exceeding \$100,000.
The FBI traced the transactions through PayPal accounts and discovered that proceeds from the ticket sales were ultimately transferred to Oduntan’s personal accounts, including a Revolut account and an Allied Irish Bank account in Ireland. Agents also identified multiple email addresses connected to his PayPal accounts, linking him directly to the scheme.
Investigators found that nearly \$350,000 had been deposited into Oduntan’s PayPal accounts from StubHub between January 2023 and July 2024. Further evidence tied the phone number used in his U.S. visa application to the fraudulent ticketing activity.
After obtaining a warrant, FBI agents arrested Oduntan shortly after he arrived in the U.S. He is currently being held at the Grayson County Detention Centre after pleading not guilty to the charges.
The arrest highlights the FBI’s ongoing efforts to combat international fraud and protect consumers from online scams targeting popular live events.
