FBI Arrests Nigerian-Born US Mayor Mobolade for Allegedly Staging Racist Attack to Boost Election Chances

Yemi Mobolade, the Nigerian-born mayor of Colorado Springs, United States, has been arrested by the FBI over allegations of orchestrating a fake hate crime during his campaign to gain an electoral advantage. The accusations suggest Mobolade played a role in staging a racist attack on himself to rally voter support, a move that has sparked widespread debate in the United States.

Reports from The Daily Wire revealed that the FBI has referred Mobolade for prosecution after uncovering evidence linking him to the incident. The alleged hate crime occurred in 2023 during a closely contested mayoral race. Investigators claim that three of Mobolade’s supporters vandalized one of his campaign signs with a racial slur and placed a burning cross nearby. Videos of the staged scene were reportedly sent to media outlets to galvanize support among Black voters for Mobolade, who is an African immigrant from Nigeria.

The individuals charged in connection with the crime—Derrick Bernard Jr., Ashley Blackcloud, and Deanna West—allegedly acted to boost Mobolade’s chances during a runoff election against his Republican opponent, Wayne Williams. Despite the controversy, Mobolade narrowly won the election, becoming the first Black mayor of the conservative-leaning city.

FBI investigators later discovered evidence of frequent communication between Mobolade and Bernard, the alleged ringleader, before, during, and after the incident. This finding contradicted Mobolade’s statements during interviews, where he denied any connection to Bernard. Investigators reportedly recovered dozens of messages exchanged between the two, which Mobolade appeared to omit when questioned by authorities.

Bernard, described as a career criminal, has a history of violent offenses, including a prior conviction for attempting to kill two police officers and an unrelated murder involving a rapper. His role in the fake hate crime has drawn further scrutiny to the case.

The FBI has since referred Mobolade to the Department of Justice for making false statements to federal investigators. However, there were reportedly initial hesitations about prosecuting Mobolade due to his historic position as Colorado Springs’ first Black mayor. A federal official commented, “The initial response from the Department of Justice was, ‘We can’t indict the first Black mayor of Colorado Springs.’ In my experience, anyone else in that position would have been charged with lying to a federal agent.”
