Fans Storm Pitch, Attack Barau FC Player Following Equaliser Against Katsina United
Tension flared on Saturday during a Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) clash between Katsina United and Barau FC when a violent incident left Barau’s player, Nana Abraham, seriously injured after being attacked by home fans.
The trouble began shortly after Barau’s Orji Kalu netted a 69th-minute equaliser to bring the score to 1–1. The goal appeared to anger a section of Katsina United supporters, who stormed the pitch and assaulted Abraham, leaving him with a deep cut on his neck.
Barau FC confirmed the attack on its official X (formerly Twitter) page, stating that play was suspended in the 70th minute as security officials struggled to restore order. Images shared online showed Abraham bleeding heavily while teammates and match officials tried to control the situation.
The match was halted temporarily before being allowed to continue once calm was restored. As of press time, neither Katsina United nor the NPFL management had issued a formal statement on the incident.
Saturday’s violence comes just weeks after fans of Kano Pillars invaded the Sani Abacha Stadium pitch during a match against Shooting Stars, prompting the NPFL to impose a ₦9.5 million fine, a three-point and three-goal deduction, and an indefinite stadium closure. The latest episode in Katsina adds to growing concerns over crowd control and player safety in the ongoing NPFL season.
