Ex-Mobil Worker Killed in Eket Beer Parlour Fight

A former Mobil Producing Nigeria Unlimited worker, Essien James, has been killed following a violent altercation in a beer parlour in Eket, Akwa Ibom State. The incident, which took place on December 6, reportedly began as an argument between James and a man identified as Lawrence Alfred, before escalating into a fatal confrontation.

A source close to James’ family, who requested anonymity, described the events leading to his death. “While they were drinking in a beer parlour, an argument ensued, which led to a fight. The suspect pushed the deceased down and hit his head with a stone. He was rushed to a hospital where he was pronounced dead by a doctor,” the source said.

Following the attack, Alfred reportedly fled to Onna Local Government Area of the state, where he remained in hiding until he was apprehended by police.

Confirming the incident, the Commissioner of Police in Akwa Ibom, Baba Azare, told the News Agency of Nigeria that the suspect has been arrested and the case is under investigation. “The deceased died during a fight with Alfred. The family reported the matter to the police on December 8, and we immediately launched an investigation,” he said.

Authorities have assured the public that due process will be followed as the investigation continues, while residents of Eket and surrounding areas express shock over the violent turn of what began as a casual drinking session.

James’ family is reported to be mourning his death, calling for justice in the matter. “We want the law to take its course. Our brother did not deserve to die in such a brutal way,” a relative said.
