Ex-IGP Mike Okiro Withdraws from Ohanaeze Ndigbo Presidential Race, Gives Reason
Former Inspector General of Police, Sir Mike Okiro, has announced his withdrawal from the race for the position of President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, the leading pan-Igbo sociopolitical organization. Okiro disclosed this decision during a press briefing in Enugu on Thursday, citing an Enugu State High Court order that barred him from participating in the election scheduled for January 10, 2025.
Explaining his decision, Okiro described the court order as based on an alleged non-indigene status, which he firmly disputed. He provided evidence of his Rivers State indigeneity, including his attestation of birth from the National Population Commission, confirmation from his traditional ruler, and his past representation of Rivers State in various capacities. He also highlighted his roles in organizations like the Rivers State Students’ Association and the South-South People’s Assembly to underscore his ties to Rivers State.
Despite his objections to the court’s order, Okiro emphasized his respect for the rule of law and commitment to democratic principles. “Obedience to court orders, no matter how unfavorable, demonstrates our commitment to democracy,” he said. He assured supporters that his legal team would pursue the matter to ensure justice while urging his community and supporters to remain steadfast in their support for the rule of law.
Okiro reaffirmed his dedication to Ohanaeze Ndigbo’s ideals of unity, progress, and peace, expressing confidence that justice would prevail. He thanked Governor Siminialayi Fubara of Rivers State for his unwavering support and called on Igbos across states to prioritize harmony and solidarity.
