Energy Crisis Deepens: Cooking Gas Prices Soar, Adding Strain to Households

The price of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), commonly known as cooking gas, has surged to N14,150 for a 12.5kg cylinder, marking a staggering 38% increase compared to the price of N10,323.33 recorded in April of the previous year, 2023.

This significant rise in LPG prices comes amidst a broader energy crisis, with aviation fuel prices also experiencing a notable hike, reaching between N1,300 and N1,500 per liter in the domestic market, reflecting a 33% increase from the previous year’s rates.

Investigations revealed that the price surge extends to smaller LPG cylinders as well, with the cost of a 5kg cylinder climbing by 37% to N5,700 from N4,642.27 during the same period.

Commenting on the situation, Mr. Oladapo Olatunbosun, the President of the Nigerian Association of Liquefied Petroleum Gas Marketers (NALPGM), attributed the escalating prices to the ongoing foreign exchange crisis, emphasizing that LPG prices are intricately linked to fluctuations in foreign exchange rates.

In response to growing concerns, Minister of Petroleum (Gas), Ekperikpe Ekpo, acknowledged the challenges faced by consumers and outlined government efforts to address the crisis. He highlighted measures such as tax waivers on gas-related imports and ongoing discussions with stakeholders to curb gas exports, with the aim of boosting domestic supply and stabilizing prices.

Despite these efforts, there are reports of households resorting to alternative cooking methods, such as increased use of firewood, particularly in rural and suburban areas. This shift not only exacerbates environmental concerns but also underscores the urgency of finding sustainable solutions to the energy crisis gripping the nation.
