Endless Controversy Surrounds Lawmakers’ Jumbo Pay
Nigeria’s lawmakers are once again at the center of a heated debate over their substantial pay packages, which continue to stir public outcry amid the country’s economic challenges. Despite Nigeria being a developing nation with significant socio-economic issues, its legislators are among the highest-paid globally, fueling accusations of insensitivity and corruption.
Nigeria’s bicameral legislature, comprising the Senate and the House of Representatives, includes 469 members—109 senators and 360 representatives. Their duties encompass lawmaking, constituency representation, and oversight, but recent scrutiny has shifted focus to their lucrative financial compensation.
The lack of transparency surrounding lawmakers’ earnings has exacerbated public discontent. Senator Shehu Sani’s revelation during the eighth Assembly that each senator receives a monthly running cost of N13.5 million, in addition to a N750,000 salary, has intensified scrutiny. Lawmakers’ pay packages include basic salaries, constituency allowances, furniture allowances, hardship allowances, and more.
An analysis of the 2024 budget reveals that Senate members will collectively earn N8.67 billion in salaries and allowances, while House members will receive N24.43 billion. The breakdown shows that the Senate President’s annual salary is N2.48 million, with an additional N33.29 million in allowances. The Deputy Senate President earns N2.31 million annually, supplemented by about N30.94 million in allowances. Senators, in total, will cost N868.3 million in salaries and N7.72 billion in allowances.
In the House of Representatives, the Speaker’s annual salary is N2.48 million, with allowances totaling approximately N18.33 million. The Deputy Speaker earns N2.29 million annually, with N17.16 million in allowances. Representatives receive a basic annual salary of N1.99 million each, along with allowances amounting to N58.76 million each. The total cost for the House is N2.84 billion in salaries and N21.04 billion in allowances.
Public backlash has been strong, with former President Olusegun Obasanjo criticizing lawmakers for their high salaries. The Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) has since clarified that senators earn N1.06 million monthly, totaling N12.72 million annually per senator. This includes a basic salary and various allowances such as vehicle maintenance and constituency expenses.
Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu and House Spokesperson Rotimi Akin have defended their pay, stating that discrepancies in salary figures are due to specific cases and not representative of the entire House. Despite this, the exact figures for allowances remain undisclosed.
The Senate has refuted claims of excessive pay and defended its budget, stating that their compensation aligns with constitutional provisions and cost of governance. Senate Spokesman Yemi Adaramodu dismissed accusations of financial misconduct and emphasized that constituency projects are standard practice in democracies.
