#EndBadGovernance Protests Erupt in Abuja, Lagos
Protests against escalating economic hardship have commenced in Lagos and Abuja as citizens express their frustrations on Nigeria’s 64th Independence Day.
This morning, demonstrators gathered at the Ikeja underbridge area of Lagos for a rally dubbed the “National Day of Survival.” The event, led by Omoyele Sowore, the presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC) in the 2023 elections, drew significant attention in the nation’s commercial hub.
The protests are organized by various civil society organizations (CSOs) under the banner of the #EndBadGovernance movement. According to the organizers, the demonstration aims to highlight grievances related to recent fuel price hikes, soaring food costs, and the broader impact of inflation on the daily lives of Nigerians.
The timing of the protest coincides with Nigeria’s Independence Day, serving as a stark reminder of the economic challenges faced by many citizens. This demonstration follows a nationwide #EndBadGovernance protest held in August, which resulted in violent clashes in some northern states.
