Emirates Resumes Bookings for Nigerian Passengers as UAE Reopens Visa Portal Following Two-Year Ban

Emirates, the flagship airline of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), has officially resumed ticket bookings for Nigerian passengers ahead of its flight operations resumption on October 1, 2024. This development comes after a two-year suspension of services and visa issuance to Nigerians.

In May 2024, Emirates announced plans to restart its Lagos-Dubai flights after halting operations in Nigeria due to difficulties repatriating funds, which amounted to over $85 million. The suspension was further compounded by a visa ban imposed by UAE authorities on Nigerian travelers.

The Federal Government of Nigeria had engaged in extensive negotiations with the UAE to resolve the issues, leading to the eventual reopening of both flight services and visa applications. Currently, Emirates is offering tickets with fares starting at $665.30 (approximately N1,059,969.41) for economy class and $8,852 for first class on its Lagos-Dubai route.

In a related development, the Dubai Visa Processing Centre (DVPC) has also resumed operations, now accepting visa applications from Nigerians traveling to Dubai. A 60-day tourist visa is priced at N218,450, excluding verification fees.

Furthermore, the UAE has announced a two-month visa amnesty starting from September 1, 2024, allowing individuals who have overstayed or lack proper documentation to regularize their status or return home without penalties. This amnesty covers all visa types, providing a much-needed reprieve for many Nigerians stranded in the UAE.

A Nigerian resident in the UAE shared with our correspondent, “The amnesty offers a chance for those of us here to either legalize our stay or return home without any penalties. We’re hopeful that soon, Nigerians back home will also start receiving visas.”

The lifting of the visa ban was confirmed by Nigeria’s Minister of Information, Mohammed Idris. However, shortly after the announcement, a fake website emerged, misleading applicants to pay a hefty N640,000 verification fee. The UAE has since denied any such conditions, urging travelers to exercise caution.

Aviation expert, Olumide Ohunayo, noted that while the visa application process has restarted, some restrictions remain in place. He urged the Nigerian government to continue diplomatic efforts to ease these restrictions and ensure fair treatment for Nigerian travelers.

As the October 1st flight resumption date approaches, the reopening of the visa portal marks a significant step towards restoring travel ties between Nigeria and the UAE.
