Emergency Meeting Called by PDP Governors in Response to Political Crisis in Rivers State

In response to the escalating political crisis in Rivers state, Governors elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have called for an emergency meeting. The meeting is slated to take place today, with the governors gathering at the Akwa Ibom state governor’s lodge in Abuja.

The primary agenda of this emergency meeting is to address the unfolding crisis in Rivers state, which has recently witnessed a series of dramatic events. Additionally, the off-cycle gubernatorial elections in Bayelsa, Imo, and Kogi will be discussed.

The political turmoil in Rivers state reached a critical point on Sunday night when a fire ravaged a section of the Rivers state assembly complex, including the main chamber. This incident was swiftly followed by a political crisis that revolved around the alleged plot to impeach Governor Siminalayi Fubara.

Ehie Edison, a close ally of Governor Fubara, was abruptly removed from his position as the leader of the house of assembly. However, within hours, he was elected as the new speaker of the assembly. In another striking move, all local government chairpersons in the state were reportedly dismissed, and the state executive council was dissolved.

Furthermore, Chibuzor Amadi, the chief judge of the state, faced suspension by members of the assembly who remained loyal to Governor Fubara. In a dramatic twist, Governor Fubara himself addressed a gathering of supporters and claimed that he had been shot at and teargassed by police personnel while attempting to access the house of assembly.

These events in Rivers state have occurred against the backdrop of growing speculation regarding a rift between Governor Fubara and Nyesom Wike, the immediate past governor of the state and the current minister of the federal capital territory (FCT).
