“Emefiele Awarded Contracts to Wife, Brother-in-law,” Says Witness in Court

In a dramatic turn of events at the FCT High Court in Maitama, Abuja, Mr. Michael Agboro, the seventh prosecution witness, has alleged that suspended Central Bank Governor Godwin Emefiele awarded contracts to companies owned by his wife and brother-in-law.

Emefiele faces a 20-count amended charge brought forth by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), including allegations of criminal breach of trust, forgery, and obtaining money under false pretenses during his tenure at the apex bank.

The EFCC accuses Emefiele of forging a document purportedly from the office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation to obtain undue advantages for “April 1616 Nigeria Ltd” and “Architekon Nigeria Ltd”.

Agboro, an investigator with the ICPC, testified that contracts were approved by Emefiele himself, despite the former CBN governor not holding positions as a director or shareholder in either company. He further confirmed that there was no evidence of direct payments made to Emefiele by these firms.

During cross-examination by Emefiele’s defense counsel, Mathew Burkaa, Agboro clarified that Emefiele’s actions allegedly conferred benefits not only on himself but also on his wife and brother-in-law.
