Electricity Prices May Drop Soon as Power Reforms Take Root – Minister Adelabu

Nigeria’s Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, has expressed optimism about a potential reduction in electricity costs as ongoing reforms in the power sector continue to take shape. Adelabu made the statement during a meeting in Abuja with the Executive Secretary of the National Lottery Trust Fund, Mr. Tosin Adeyanju, and his management team.

Adelabu noted that Nigeria still enjoys some of the lowest electricity tariffs in Africa when compared to countries like Togo, Mali, and Niger. However, he acknowledged that the country’s low-income levels make electricity prices feel burdensome for many households. He assured that electricity remains significantly more affordable than running generators, especially with the high cost of petrol and diesel.

Adeyanju, speaking during the meeting, revealed that the National Lottery Trust Fund, under President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, is focused on empowering rural youth through solar energy training. The plan is to equip young people with the skills to assemble one-kilowatt solar energy systems, which would create job opportunities in rural areas.

“We are seeking a partnership with the Ministry of Power to train rural youths to assemble solar energy systems. This will help tackle unemployment and youth restiveness in rural communities, especially for those already skilled in trades like hairdressing, welding, and vulcanizing,” Adeyanju explained.

Adelabu expressed the Ministry’s willingness to collaborate with the Trust Fund, pointing out that the Ministry’s renewable energy projects were designed to serve areas that are not connected to the national grid. He mentioned that the Rural Electricity Agency (REA) is at the forefront of these initiatives, utilizing solar, wind, and other alternative power sources to meet the electricity needs of underserved regions.

The Minister also highlighted the global rise in energy prices, driven by geopolitical tensions such as the Russia-Ukraine war, but reaffirmed the government’s commitment to providing reliable and affordable electricity to all Nigerians, particularly in rural areas.

“President Tinubu’s focus is on transforming Nigeria, with a special emphasis on youth and rural development. If Nigerians are patient, they will see the benefits of these initiatives,” Adelabu stated.
