EFCC Secures Nigeria’s Largest Asset Forfeiture with Recovery of Lavish Abuja Estate

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has secured the final forfeiture of a sprawling estate in Abuja, marking the largest single-asset recovery in its 21-year history. The estate, located in the Lokogoma District of the Federal Capital Territory, spans an impressive 150,500 square meters and boasts 753 luxury units of duplexes and apartments.

The property, valued in the billions, was linked to a former senior government official now under investigation for money laundering. While the EFCC has kept the official’s identity under wraps, the agency confirmed that the estate was acquired with funds suspected to be proceeds of unlawful activities.

Justice Jude Onwuegbuzie of the FCT High Court issued the final forfeiture order after the respondent failed to provide a credible explanation for the source of wealth used to develop the estate. The judge ruled that the property, having been reasonably traced to corrupt activities, should be handed over to the federal government.

The EFCC, relying on provisions in the Advance Fee Fraud Act and the Nigerian Constitution, emphasized that this recovery represents a pivotal moment in its mission to prevent corrupt individuals from enjoying the proceeds of their crimes. The commission also reaffirmed its commitment to asset tracing and recovery as central to its anti-corruption strategy.

EFCC Chairman Ola Olukoyede has consistently highlighted the significance of asset recovery in dismantling financial crimes. Addressing lawmakers recently, he stressed the importance of tracing illicit assets during investigations, warning that allowing suspects access to stolen funds enables them to undermine justice.
