EFCC Recovers N30 Billion from Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs Scandal
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has successfully recovered over N30 billion from the alleged N37.1 billion laundered within the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs during the tenure of former minister Sadiya Umar-Farouk. The funds were traced to 38 different bank accounts associated with contractor James Okwete.
Sources within the anti-graft agency revealed that the recovery was made possible after imposing a lien on the bank accounts of both Umar-Farouk and Okwete, who are currently undergoing intensive interrogation. The ongoing investigation has also led to the discovery of over N500 million linked to the successor of Umar-Farouk, Betta Edu, recently suspended by President Bola Tinubu.
An EFCC spokesperson, Dele Oyewale, declined to comment on the matter. However, it was disclosed that between October 2023 and January 19, 2024, the EFCC has made a total recovery of N70.56 billion, including N60.97 billion, $10.52 million, £150,002.10, and €4,119.90. The agency received 3,325 petitions, accepted 2,657, and secured the conviction of 747 individuals for financial crimes during this period.
The breakdown of the recovered funds indicates significant contributions from various EFCC commands across the nation, highlighting the agency’s relentless efforts in combating corruption. Chairman Ola Olukoyede emphasized the focus on high-profile cases, with ongoing probes revealing money laundering involvement of former governors and ministers, bringing the total amount under scrutiny to approximately N130.1 billion as of January 31, 2024. The EFCC remains committed to its mission of ensuring accountability and justice in financial matters.
