EFCC, Presidency Mum Two Months After Suspension of Minister Betta Edu

In the wake of Dr. Betta Edu’s suspension as Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation two months ago, both the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Presidency remain tight-lipped on the impending actions, leaving Nigerians in suspense.

Sources reveal that following Edu’s suspension on January 8, the EFCC conducted a thorough investigation and submitted an interim report to the presidency, recommending prosecution. However, political pressure, especially from influential figures like Senate President Godswill Akpabio, is allegedly pushing for a “soft landing” for Edu, possibly in the form of a different appointment.

Contrastingly, Halima Shehu, the suspended coordinator of the National Social Investment Programme Agency (NSIPA), may have been cleared by the EFCC in its interim report, according to undisclosed sources. The leaked documents related to NSIPA expenditures under Halima’s tenure were reportedly found to adhere to standard procedures.

Despite these claims, EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale maintains that the investigation is ongoing, while Eseme Eyiboh, spokesman for the Senate president, denies any influence from Akpabio on Edu’s fate.

Notably, both suspended officials are yet to be listed for prosecution by the EFCC, raising questions about the agency’s adherence to its responsibilities.

Dr. Betta Edu faced suspension after controversial approvals and a memo surfaced, requesting the transfer of N585 million to a private account. The presidency also directed a separate investigation led by Minister Wale Edun, aiming to reform the social investment programs initially overseen by the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs.

Edun’s panel recommended transferring the intervention initiatives to the Federal Ministry of Finance and relaunching direct cash transfers to alleviate the suffering of vulnerable Nigerians. While the fate of Edu and Halima remains uncertain, Nigerians await clarity on the EFCC and presidency’s stance regarding the interim report.
