EFCC Chief Raises Red Flag: Majority of Nigerian Students, 7 in 10, Involved in Cybercrimes

In a recent meeting with a delegation from Daar Communication PLC at the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) headquarters in Jabi, Abuja, EFCC Chairman Ola Olukoyede expressed deep concern over the prevalence of cybercrime among Nigerian students.

Olukoyede lamented that “seven out of 10 Nigerian students are involved in cybercrimes,” describing it as a growing menace and cankerworm in society. The EFCC chairman emphasized the need for urgent intervention to address this alarming trend.

During the meeting, Olukoyede urged the media, particularly Daar Communications, to design programs aimed at enlightening youths about the consequences of engaging in cybercrimes. He stressed the importance of wider media enlightenment across the country to combat the escalating issue.

“We are looking towards Daar Communications to enlighten our youths on the evils of cybercrimes. It is worrisome that seven out of ten students today are involved in cybercrimes,” stated Olukoyede.

Highlighting the urgency of the situation, he emphasized that these students are the future leaders of the nation, and the media plays a crucial role in steering them away from criminal practices.

The EFCC chairman’s call for media intervention comes on the heels of the agency’s recent crackdown on fraud-related offenses. In a notable operation at the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) last month, the anti-graft agency arrested up to 70 individuals suspected of engaging in fraudulent activities.

As cybercrime continues to pose a significant threat to Nigeria’s youth, the EFCC, along with media partners, seeks to raise awareness and educate the younger generation about the severe consequences associated with internet-related crimes.
