Edo LP Fumes as Obidient Movement Backs APC Candidate
The Obidient Movement has thrown its support behind the Edo State All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Senator Monday Okpebholo, for the upcoming September 21, 2024 governorship election. This endorsement has sparked a strong reaction from the Labour Party (LP) in Edo State.
The endorsement was announced on Monday by members of the Obidient Movement from the Edo South Senatorial District. They cited Senator Okpebholo’s strong connections with the local community as a key reason for their support.
The Edo State Labour Party has sharply criticized this move. They argue that it is inappropriate for members of the Obidient Movement, originally established to support Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate Peter Obi, to back a candidate from a different party.
The Obidient Movement gained prominence during the 2023 presidential election as a youth-driven initiative to support Peter Obi. However, post-election, the movement distanced itself from being affiliated with any single political party, following Obi’s clarification.
Ikhuenbor Igbinevbo, the Coordinator General of the Obidient Movement for Okpebholo, emphasized that the movement’s members prioritize good governance, fairness, and accountability. He explained their support for Okpebholo, stating, “We supported Peter Obi in 2023 because we felt it was the turn of the Igbo. Now in Edo, it is the turn of Esan, and we need the most qualified candidate who will work for everyone.”
Senator Okpebholo welcomed the endorsement, pledging to exceed the achievements of current Governor Godwin Obaseki if elected. He encouraged voters to use their votes as a form of accountability.
In contrast, Sam Uruopa, the Publicity Secretary of Edo LP, condemned the endorsement, arguing that the Obidient Movement should remain aligned with the Labour Party and its candidate, Olumide Akpata. He expressed disappointment, noting past challenges the party faced, such as being denied the use of Sam Ogbemudia Stadium before the presidential election.
Uruopa stated, “It is absurd to hear that Obidient Movement is supporting Okpebholo. They cannot be part of the Obidient Movement and work against the party’s candidate, Olumide Akpata.”
