Economic hardship is a global phenomenon, but it has not broken our spirit – Tinubu tells Labour

 

In a speech delivered on Thursday, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu urged workers to be patient with his administration as it addresses the economic challenges facing the country. Speaking at the 2025 May Day celebrations held at Eagle Square, Abuja, Tinubu acknowledged the economic hardships faced by Nigerians, particularly workers, and emphasized that the difficulties were part of a global phenomenon.

 

Represented by the Minister of Labour and Employment, Muhammad Maigari Dingyadi, the president recognized the rising costs of living, hunger, insecurity, unemployment, and the loss of livelihoods that many workers were experiencing. Despite these challenges, Tinubu assured the workforce that his administration was committed to finding solutions and creating a better environment for the common good.

 

Tinubu highlighted the global nature of economic hardship, stating that while it was testing the resolve of world leaders, it had not broken the spirit of the Nigerian people. He promised that his government was focused on implementing policies that would promote job creation, alleviate poverty, foster economic growth, and support the most vulnerable citizens.

 

Meanwhile, the leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) used the occasion to present their demands, including a call for an upward review of the retirement age for all civil servants. NLC President Joe Ajaero, speaking on behalf of the unions, emphasized the need to extend the current retirement age of 65 years, enjoyed by teachers, health professionals, and judges, to all public servants. Ajaero argued that such a move would address perceived injustices among workers and contribute to a more equitable workforce.
