Ebonyi House of Assembly Bans Spiritual Cleansing, Driving Away ‘Evil Spirits’, Other Exorcism Practices
Ebonyi State House of Assembly (EBHA) has enacted a motion banning exorcism and spiritual cleansing activities in Izzi land due to concerns over public safety and well-being.
On Wednesday, Mr. Godwin Abiri, representing Izzi West State Constituency, introduced the motion, addressing the growing issue of exorcism in his constituency and Izzi land. According to Abiri, these practices, which involve spiritual cleansing and driving away evil spirits, have led to significant disturbances and necessitate legislative intervention.
Abiri highlighted a recent crisis in Agharaoza village, Ndi-Ebo Ezzainyimagu, where a self-proclaimed prophet, Ubadimma, allegedly incited violence by accusing local individuals of witchcraft. His prophecy led to the destruction of properties, including the homes of Chief John Ekpono and his family, and the looting of their belongings. The situation escalated to the point where roads were blocked, and movement was restricted, but timely intervention by Izzi Local Government Area Chairman, Mr. Steve Nwankpa, prevented further chaos.
Abiri pointed out that the prophet and his associates have fled, while the affected family is now in refuge, and several youths involved in the violence have been arrested. He criticized fake prophets for exploiting the gullibility of people and undermining the development efforts of Governor Francis Nwifuru.
In his motion, Abiri proposed stringent measures to regulate religious activities, including requiring approval from local authorities for any spiritual engagements. He urged his colleagues to support the motion to maintain peace and harmony in rural areas.
The motion received strong support from the Leader of the House, Mr. Kingsley Ikoro, who condemned the vandalism of Chief Ekpono’s property and called for the arrest of the perpetrators. Ikoro criticized the notion of destinies being tied by others and emphasized the need for individuals to take responsibility for their own progress.
The Speaker of the House, Mr. Moses Odunwa, put the motion to a voice vote, and it was overwhelmingly approved by the members.
