DSS, Nigerian Troops Kill 45 Bandits in Ambush Operation in Niger
Operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS), supported by Nigerian troops, have killed at least 45 bandits in a coordinated ambush near Kuchi town in Munya Local Government Area of Niger State. The operation, conducted in the early hours of Monday, June 2, 2025, followed intelligence that identified an impending large-scale attack planned by notorious bandit leader Dogo Gide and his loyalists.
Security sources confirmed that the ambush was the result of extensive covert surveillance and intelligence gathering. The DSS tracked the movements of the armed group—estimated at around 100 fighters—who had travelled from Bilbis forest in Maru LGA of Zamfara State and parts of Kaduna State, reportedly in response to a call from Gide to launch coordinated assaults on villages in the Kuchi area.
As the bandits approached Kuchi heavily armed, DSS operatives and troops intercepted them on the town’s outskirts, launching a surprise attack that triggered a fierce gun battle. By the end of the confrontation, 45 bandits were confirmed dead, with several others injured. Security forces also recovered weapons and motorcycles used by the attackers.
Five DSS operatives sustained serious injuries during the firefight and are currently receiving medical treatment. The operation is part of a broader effort by security agencies to dismantle criminal strongholds and reclaim territories seized by bandits in recent years.
Sources described the ambush as a significant blow to Dogo Gide’s network, which has suffered heavy losses due to increased pressure from DSS-led offensives. In recent months, the notorious kingpin has seen his influence wane as operatives continue to disrupt his operations across the region.
Local communities have welcomed the latest development, expressing hope that the sustained security efforts will bring lasting peace to the area.
