Drunk Zambian Policeman Frees 13 Suspects to Celebrate New Year

A Zambian police officer reportedly under the influence of alcohol caused a stir by releasing 13 detainees from custody to mark the New Year, prompting an active manhunt for the escapees.

According to reports by the BBC, Inspector Titus Phiri took the keys to the holding cells at Leonard Cheelo Police Station in Lusaka on New Year’s Eve. The detainees, held for offenses including assault, robbery, and burglary, were freed after Phiri seized the keys from Constable Serah Banda.

Police spokesperson Rae Hamoonga confirmed the incident, explaining, “In a state of intoxication, [Phiri] forcibly seized cell keys, unlocked both the male and female cells, and instructed the suspects to leave, stating they were free to cross over into the new year.”
