“Don’t Pitch Frank Mba Against His Oga – He’s Loyal to Egbetokun and Happy as DIG” – Reno Omokri
Reno Omokri has dismissed speculations that Deputy Inspector-General of Police (DIG) Frank Mba is involved in the controversy surrounding the tenure of Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun. Omokri stated that Mba is loyal to Egbetokun and content with his current role.
The controversy stems from debates over whether Egbetokun, who turned 60 in September 2024, should have retired. Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF) Lateef Fagbemi clarified that the IGP’s appointment, which took effect on October 31, 2023, is valid for four years. Despite this, some social media users suggested that Mba, an Igbo officer, was behind the debate in an attempt to succeed Egbetokun. Others alleged that the IGP’s tenure was extended to prevent an Igbo officer from taking over.
Omokri, a former presidential aide, rejected these claims, warning that they could damage Mba’s career. He emphasized that the appointment of an IGP is based on merit and presidential discretion, not social media narratives.
He further stated that Mba is one of Egbetokun’s strongest supporters within the police force, describing their relationship as one of “fierce and unflinching” loyalty. According to Omokri, sources within the police affirm that Mba remains committed to his role and has no interest in undermining his boss.
Mba, who was promoted to DIG in June 2023, is currently the most senior police officer from the South-East geopolitical zone.
