Deputy Speaker Kalu, 8 Others Sponsor Bill to Establish Bola Tinubu University of Nigerian Languages

The House of Representatives has passed a bill for the first reading aimed at establishing the Bola Ahmed Tinubu Federal University of Nigerian Languages. Sponsored by Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu and eight others, the proposed institution is designed to promote the study and development of Nigerian languages and cultures.

The bill outlines the purpose of the university as a hub for higher education that would be accessible to all, regardless of race, creed, sex, or political affiliation. According to Section II of the bill, the university will focus on fostering learning and awarding degrees across disciplines related to Nigerian languages. It aims to produce graduates with the ability to communicate effectively in Nigerian languages, contributing to national development.

Beyond traditional academic programs, the university is expected to serve as a catalyst for research, innovation, and the sustainable use of Nigeria’s natural and human resources. Additionally, it will collaborate with other institutions involved in language and cultural studies and emphasize in-service training, continuing education, and adaptive research.

The bill further states that the university will provide consultancy services in Nigerian languages and facilitate community outreach. The President of Nigeria, who will act as the visitor to the university, is required to conduct a visitation at least once every five years to oversee the institution’s activities and performance. The President also holds the authority to remove council members, excluding the pro-chancellor and vice-chancellor, upon recommendation from the university’s governing council in cases of misconduct or inability to perform their duties.

The bill is expected to be scheduled for a second reading in the coming weeks, followed by a public hearing to gather input from stakeholders.
