Death Toll in Jos School Building Collapse Reaches 22, 132 Injured
The Plateau state government has confirmed that 22 people have died and 132 have been injured following the collapse of a school building at Saints Academy. The disaster occurred on Friday while students and teachers were attending third-term examinations in the two-storey building located in the Busa Buji community of Jos North LGA.
Musa Ashoms, the Plateau Commissioner for Information and Communication, reported that the school housed around 400 individuals, with 200 of them present in the section that collapsed. Ashoms attributed the collapse to the building being constructed on a waterlogged area, which did not adhere to proper construction standards.
Providing an update on the situation, Ashoms stated that the collapse resulted in a total of 154 casualties. Emergency responders are currently engaged in search and rescue operations at the site.
“As of 6:00 pm, 154 people have been rescued from the debris. Sadly, 22 individuals have been confirmed deceased. Injured students and staff are receiving medical treatment at various hospitals across Jos,” Ashoms said.
The Plateau state government activated emergency response protocols immediately upon learning of the incident. The injured victims are being treated at several medical facilities throughout the state.
Efforts to rescue any remaining individuals and recover from this devastating event are ongoing.
