Deadly Ambush Claims Lives of Soldiers, Vigilantes in Nasarawa
A militia group launched a deadly ambush in Katakpa community of Toto local government area in Nasarawa State, resulting in the reported deaths of three soldiers and two vigilante members. The attack occurred during a peace mission to address the escalating violence in the troubled Katakpa area.
Chairman of Toto Local Government Area, Abdullahi Tashas, and the state lawmaker representing Ugya-Umaisha constituency, Ibrahim Saad, confirmed the casualties in a telephone conversation with ait.live. The victims, deployed to maintain peace in the region due to persistent attacks by the militia group, fell victim to the ambush allegedly orchestrated by the Bassa militia.
The soldiers, committed to restoring calm in the face of ongoing attacks on Toto communities, were attacked and killed by the same group they sought to deter. The incident sheds light on the longstanding clashes between the Bassa and Egbira communities in Toto local government area, primarily revolving around boundary demarcation. The State Government has convened multiple meetings in an attempt to bring an end to the protracted conflict.
This recent act of violence underscores the challenges faced in resolving the deep-seated tensions and highlights the urgent need for comprehensive measures to ensure the safety and security of the affected communities in Nasarawa State.
