Dangote Refinery: We’ve Exported Petrol to Cameroon, Ghana, Angola, South Africa
Dangote Petroleum Refinery has recently exported Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), also known as petrol, to Cameroon, Ghana, Angola, and South Africa, further expanding its reach in the global market. Dr. Devakumar Edwin, Vice President of Oil and Gas at Dangote Industries Limited, shared this development during a visit from a delegation of the Japanese Business Community in Nigeria, led by Japan’s Ambassador-designate to Nigeria, Suzuki Hideo.
In his remarks, Dr. Edwin revealed that in addition to petrol, the refinery has also been exporting diesel worldwide and jet fuel to European markets. He emphasized that the refinery, leveraging Africa’s vast crude oil resources, is committed to producing refined products locally, thus fostering industrial development, job creation, and economic prosperity across the continent.
The Dangote Refinery is a testament to Nigerian ingenuity, as it was designed and constructed by Nigerians with a focus on serving the global market. Dr. Edwin expressed pride in the fact that Dangote Industries Limited not only conceptualized the project but also acted as the Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) contractor, overseeing the development of the world’s largest single-train refinery.
He also highlighted the refinery’s openness to collaboration, noting that it already utilizes significant Japanese technology, particularly in the fertiliser and petrochemical sectors. The company continues to seek opportunities for technological innovation, particularly in light of Japan’s expertise in advanced technology.
The Dangote Petrochemical project, according to Dr. Edwin, is set to stimulate downstream industries in Nigeria, create jobs, boost investment, generate tax revenues, and contribute to the country’s GDP. This development will also help reduce foreign exchange outflows by meeting local demand for refined products.
Japanese officials, including Ambassador-designate Suzuki Hideo and Takashi Oku, Managing Director of the Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO), praised the refinery during their visit. Hideo called the Dangote Refinery an “astonishing masterpiece,” underscoring its role in showcasing Nigeria’s technological advancements on the global stage. Oku added that while Nigeria is recognized as the gateway to Africa, the Dangote Refinery serves as a key example of the country’s technological progress, with its size and impact leaving a lasting impression on international visitors.
Masahiro Tsuno, Managing Director of Itochu Nigeria Limited, also expressed admiration for the refinery’s scale and automation, referring to it as a “miracle” and one of the wonders of the world. He emphasized that the size of this refinery, built by a single investor, is unparalleled globally, and his company is eager to explore collaboration with Dangote Refinery in areas such as polypropylene and other petroleum products.
