Dangote Refinery Accelerates Production with US Crude Imports, Eyes Market Transformation

The Dangote Petroleum Refinery, boasting a capacity of 650,000 barrels per day, has commenced operations by incorporating cheaper oil imports from the United States for up to one-third of its feedstock.

According to a recent report by Bloomberg, the refinery has initiated product shipments while preparing two units to facilitate gasoline production, promising a significant overhaul of the fuel market in Nigeria and the broader region, as per analysts’ assessments.

Alan Gelder, Vice President of Refining, Chemicals, and Oil Markets at Wood Mackenzie, expressed that Dangote’s operations will significantly impact the Atlantic Basin gasoline markets, particularly with the imminent commencement of the residue fluid catalytic cracking unit (RFCC), which enhances heavier product output.

Currently running at approximately 300,000 barrels per day, nearly half of its capacity, analysts from Wood Mackenzie, FGE, and Citac project the refinery’s gasoline-focused units to come online by summer, with the RFCC potentially operational by year-end.

Despite operational challenges, the refinery has initiated shipments of jet fuel, gasoil, and naphtha, with gasoline deliveries anticipated to commence in May, according to Dangote Industries. The recent reduction in diesel prices, announced by the refinery, has elicited excitement among downstream oil sector operators.

Significantly, a substantial portion of the oil supplied to the refinery thus far comprises US-grade WTI Midland, highlighting a potential shift in sourcing strategies if foreign oil prices continue to undercut local supplies.

Meanwhile, Nigeria’s recent policy directives compel domestic refineries to purchase crude domestically, marking a strategic effort to reduce reliance on imported refined products. The decision, coupled with the flexibility to transact in local currency, aims to bolster Nigeria’s refining capacity and foster economic stability.
