“Cut Ties with US if Trump Fails to Withdraw Threat,” Gumi Tells Tinubu
Prominent Islamic cleric Sheikh Ahmad Gumi has called on President Bola Tinubu to take firm diplomatic action against U.S. President Donald Trump following Trump’s reported threat of military action against Nigeria.
In a statement posted on his verified Facebook page on Sunday, Gumi described Trump’s remarks as an affront to Nigeria’s sovereignty and urged the government to respond swiftly. “For Trump to threaten a sovereign country with military attack is a profound disrespect to our authority, but we can rise above it,” he wrote.
Gumi advised that the Nigerian government summon the U.S. ambassador to demand a public retraction of the statement. He further warned that failure to withdraw the threat should prompt Nigeria to sever diplomatic relations with the United States. “President Tinubu should summon the U.S. ambassador; they either retract their threats or we sever diplomatic ties with this irresponsible regime,” he said.
The cleric also urged Nigeria to consider diversifying its economic and military partnerships, noting that the country has many alternative avenues for cooperation. “There are lots of other options for our economic expansion and military alliance,” Gumi added.
