Court Sentences Ex-NEXIM MD to 490 Years for N2.4 Billion Fraud
A Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court in Abuja has sentenced former Nigerian Export-Import Bank (NEXIM) Managing Director Robert Orya to 490 years in prison for fraud and abuse of office involving N2.4 billion.
Justice F.E. Messiri delivered the judgment on Thursday, February 5, 2026, after finding Orya guilty on 49 counts, including misappropriation, criminal breach of trust, impersonation, and official corruption. The court imposed 10 years for each count.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), which prosecuted Orya, confirmed the conviction, noting that the former bank chief misused his position between 2011 and 2016 to secure over N1.36 billion from NEXIM.
Orya was first arraigned on November 25, 2021, by the EFCC before Justice Messiri on the 49-count charge. The case marks one of the most significant financial crime convictions in recent years in Nigeria.
